The history of this town revolves around a riveting pre historic legend. Hindu mythology has it that Manali was the abode of the life giver, Manu, which is the reason behind the name 'Manali. It is said that when a flood tormented the earth, Manu and the gods were hauled to dry the ground by a fish, which is said to have been the seventh `avatar' of the god Vishnu. This town was a quaint place until the mid twenties, when the British started to stalk the town, making it a favorable tourist destination. Manali is blessed with several gifts like a beautiful landscape, dense thick pine and deodar forests, ice-capped peaks, steep cliffs, rolling valleys, adventure and mystery and lush meadows of wild flowers and fragrant fruit orchard in full bloom. Besides, the Beas river with clear water meanders through the town, making Manali truly a paradise on earth for any traveller.

Manali literally means the 'Home of Manu'. Manu is the mythological character who is supposed to have survived when the world was drowned in Flood. He then came to Manali and recreated human life. Thus, the area of Manali is sacred and Hindus treat the temples over here as pilgrimage.
